Information about Person-Directed Planning and Independent Facilitation

Person-Directed Planning

Person-directed planning helps people to identify their life vision and goals and helps them to develop a plan for finding and using services and supports to meet these goals with the help of their families and/or significant others. This is an important approach to promoting social inclusion for persons with developmental disabilities.

Person-directed planning is guided by the following values:

  • Belonging;
  • Contributing;
  • Sharing;
  • Being Respected and;
  • Choosing.

It is also guided by the following principles:

  • Visioning;
  • Strength-Based;
  • Person-Driven;
  • Sustainability and;
  • Accountability

In November 2013, a Person-Directed Planning Facilitation Guide was developed by the MCSS to support organizations interested in developing person directed planning and facilitation capacity.  Click HERE to access this Guide.  The ministry considers this Guide to be technical in nature. This document is therefore most relevant to practitioners, who carry out or implement planning and facilitation services on a day-to- day basis. However, the contents of the Guide will be of interest to anyone who has an interest in the details of what good quality person-directed planning looks like and how it can be implemented.

The ministry is publishing an additional document which has been specifically designed for use by persons with developmental disabilities and their families. The plain language document sets out information from the technical document which is of particular interest to individuals and their families.

People can choose who they would like to help them develop their plans.

Independent Facilitation

As of April 2013, people across the province are able to access two new online resources. Both provide a range of useful information for anyone interested in learning more about independent facilitation, which provides support to help people engage in person-directed planning, connecting with community life, and relationship building. Independent facilitators may work on their own or they may work within an organization or collaborative group of other private facilitators. Typically, they belong to a network of independent facilitators. The following resources have been approved by the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS). These resources are operated independently of the DSO HNR. Please click on the links below for full information.

Agency Facilitation

Some ministry funded agencies also have staff who can provide person-directed planning facilitation. Click HERE to access this list of agencies.
